What is Mule Tape & How to Care for it

Mule tape halters have exploded in popularity for good reason: they're incredibly strong, lightweight, and won't rot or mildew like traditional rope halters. But like any piece of tack, they work best when they're properly broken in and well maintained. Here's what you need to know.

What Is Mule Tape?

Mule tape is a flat, woven polypropylene pull tape originally used by utility companies to pull wire through conduit. It's extremely high-tensile, resistant to water and UV, and has virtually no stretch — making it ideal for firm, consistent halters that hold their shape over years of use.

Everyday Care for Mule Tape Halters

One of the best things about mule tape is how easy it is to care for compared to leather:

  • Rinse off sweat and dirt with plain water after sweaty rides. Dried salt can degrade the fibers over time.
  • Hand wash with mild soap when the halter is visibly dirty. A soft brush helps work soap into the weave. Rinse thoroughly.
  • Air dry completely before storing. Even though mule tape resists moisture, damp tack stored in an enclosed space can develop mildew on hardware and knots.
  • Check knots for tightness. Over time and with use, knots can shift slightly. Periodically check that all knots are tight and the halter is still fitting properly.

How Long Do Mule Tape Halters Last?

With proper care, a quality mule tape halter can last 5–10 years or more. The polypropylene material is highly UV-resistant, and because it doesn't absorb water, it won't rot or stiffen like rope or leather in wet conditions. Replace your halter if you notice fraying, fading, or structural weakening at knot points.
